During the week of October 14, La Scuola International School proudly celebrated La Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo with a series of enriching activities that immersed our students in the beauty and celebration of the Italian language. The theme for this year, “L’italiano e il libro: Il mondo fra le righe”, guided our celebrations as we explored the power of books and language. It was a festive week for our Italian language immersion program.

We began with an all-school assemblea, where our elementary students created thoughtful videos about what the Italian language and books mean to them. Our middle school students shared their work on reading between the lines of the book Nel mare ci sono i coccodrilli, to bring characters to life through portraits and powerful read-alouds.

Later in the week we hosted our first-ever Giornata della Lingua Italiana. Throughout the day, everyone in the school—students, staff, and teachers—spoke Italian, from simple greetings to instructions, truly fostering a vibrant Italian community.

During recess, students participated in stations at the park, creating Italian signs for our school, such as “biblioteca,” “bagno,” and “ufficio.” Italian music played during dismissal and quiet times, adding to the immersive experience.

Additionally, Italian teachers visited different grades to share special readings, offering students new perspectives on Italian literature and culture.

The week was a wonderful reminder of how language brings us together and enriches our community. Grazie to everyone who participated and contributed to making these celebrations meaningful and memorable!

Early exposure to additional languages enables more neural connections to form in a child’s brain, actually improving skills in their first language. Our students are bilingual (many are multilingual) and as a result, have better control over their attention, decision making, and planning than students who learn in one language. Bilingualism is well known to be a strong predictor of academic success and lifelong happiness and Italian especially benefits students with an understanding of Latin roots and an increased ability to appreciate art, music, history, and science.  Learn more about La Scuola International School and the Language program by visiting our website at www.lascuolasf.org.
