International School of the Future

Groundbreaking of the New Mission Campus Building: The Beginning of a New Chapter in La Scuola’s History

lascuolablog Development, School Information

It is with great excitement I share that construction has officially begun on the new building at our Mission Campus! This 18-month construction project will transform our current San Francisco Mission location into the ideal international school of the future – the first and only of its kind in the United States.  To commemorate this special milestone, La Scuola recently hosted an official groundbreaking ceremony where our faculty, staff, current and former board members, donors, local authorities, and community partners came together to ceremoniously commemorate the day.

At La Scuola, the environment is more than mere space or setting – it’s a teacher that plays an essential role in our education and our future. The sunlight through the windows, the aromas of the garden, the color of the paint. We know that environmental factors such as these illuminate the course of our lives, with opportunity and hope. That’s why we invest our energy, intelligence, and care to create the optimal environment for education; so that all the members of our community continue to grow “open to the world.” This is the path we’ve chosen.

Today, we have an opportunity to continue to build upon our efforts thus far and to make a resounding impact for generations to come. Already, our community has grown beyond the bounds of our current building. And, as more and more families choose La Scuola for its unique ability to elevate students as the protagonists in their own education, we need to create a new campus that’s as expansive as our imaginations.

This building will become the main entrance to our campus and will house our food atelier, dining room, art, music, and makers’ ateliers and will be designed with flexible classroom partitions. The Ateliers/Studio spaces are unique and at the heart of the Reggio Emilia program as they provide students with innovative spaces to learn, explore, create and experiment. This learning space will match our unique learning approach, with the ability to learn, find beauty in life, and discover extraordinary answers.

We will continue to update our community with real-time information on our dedicated Mission Campus Construction website page, where we will share time-lapse videos, photos, FAQs, and project updates.  Check back regularly to learn of the work in progress and the progress that has been made.

For a quick peek on what the completed project will look like, take a few minutes to view this short video, put together with architectural renderings.

In parallel with this exciting milestone, we have also launched the public phase of the Embrace Campaign, which philanthropically supports this incredible project. The Embrace Campaign is the first of its kind for La Scuola, and since the campaign’s inception in 2018, La Scuola has devoted our hands and hearts to this transformational project. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our early supporters, we have already raised $9 million of our $10 million goal! We invite our entire community to join us in reaching the finish line: if you would like to learn more about this initiative, and donate to our Embrace Campaign, please contact our Advancement Director, Robin Bonaso, at advancement@lascuolasf.org, or visit our online giving page.

Con stima e affetto,
